Portrait of Lucien Simon by Charles Cottet
Lucien Simon was born in Paris. He was a contributor to L'Estampe Moderne. Lucien Simon taught at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts; among his pupils were Lucien Fontanarosa, Yves Brayer, and Georges Rohner. Lucien Simon was himself taught by William Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. Lucien Simon exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français; from 1931-1934 he also exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. Lucien Simon specialised in Breton and religious subjects. The artist André Dauchez was his brother-in-law. In the 1890s Simon and Dauchez were both members of the Bande Noire, a group of artists led by Charles Cottet

Churchwarden Pipe: when new these pipes measure 40cm (16") long. As each patron uses the pipe, the tip is broken off, leaving a "clean" mouthpiece for the next use.
A Churchwarden is a lay official in a parish church of the Anglican Communion, usually working as a part-time volunteer. Holders of these positions are ex officio members of the parish board, usually called a vestry, parish council, parochial church council, or in the case of a Cathedral Parish, The Chapter.

Not unlike the Maitre de L'Affiche series, L'Estampe Moderne was a portfolio printed between 1897-98, published by Imprimerie Champenois, Paris, contained 24 monthly portfolios, with four original lithographs in each. Each commissioned only for this series. Some of the contributing artists included Mucha, Rhead, Meunier, Ibels, Steinlen, Willette and Grasset.
